Hi. I'm from Mebourne and will be applying for med in 2009. From what I have read, I only thought the uni of Melbourne was the only post-grad med school in Victoria that you could apply for! From your messages, you suggest that Monash and Deakin also offer post-grad, is this right?

Hi yeah - where you been? Both these schools are in the guide, and open from 2008. This finally goes some way to redressing the chronic undertraining in this state, now overcome since the Royal Colleges (many based here) got dealt with by the ACCC. They used to effectively set the number of undergrad med places and it was a protectionist scam as far as I'm concerned. The fight is still simmering between them and the ACCC over specialist numbers, although they themselves are backing down now the shortages are so acute.

I think you have to wait till you get your results email, that will have a userid and password.

Yes, Brad, they're listed in the GAMSA guide, so you've got three options down in Vic. Lucky!

I agree - very lucky. Wish we had a notre dame or something similar in QLD to give us a 3rd med school option!

Yeah, but isn't grad-entry places in monash very restricted. I thought they just offer Gippsland (or something of the like) places (ie. country places). Studying med in country vic is like moving to another state, so really theres only two Melbourne options. Monash has always had traditionally an undergraduate medicine course. Personally, I think the med entry in Australia sucks. Here, there are more places going to undergrads then postgrads, where in America, undergrad places are almost unheard of. Really, postgrad entry should be the primarily mode of entry given the dedication needed for the career (not saying high school leavers aren't well aware of what they are getting into but post-grads are more climitized)

Here here. I agree we need a lot more post grad places - especially if we want our hospitals filled with AUSSIE docs rather than overseas trained ones!

Yep Victoria is still way the most underserved state in terms of grad places - almost half the places of both Queensland and NSW (incl. ANU).
(Melbourne is going full graduate programme in a few years.)

If you're over 35 like me, the option didn't even exist to do grad med at the time, and I missed out on it in HSC by about 2 marks ....so I've sort of moved on from ever being able to achieve that dream. Not that I'm complaining mind you - life's been pretty good to me! Very Happy
