Hi all,
Like the subject says I'm thinking of sitting the GAMSAT next year. But I come from an economics/business background and the only science I have done is HSC physics.

If anyone has got any advice/experiences they would like to share I would really appreciate it.

I was thinking over using the summer uni break to get prepared, so if anyone can recommend any good 1st year chem and bio textbook, that would be a big help.

Thanks in advance, Greg. Very Happy

ps best of luck to all those who sat it on the weekend

Hi Greg

It is a really long exam.

There was a strong focus on organic chem this year.

For general chem, i would use Zumdahl. Also get a good organic chem, biology and human anatomy text book.

If you haven't done any science subjects I would start in the middle of the year. This will give you enough time to work through all the textbooks and a reasonable pace. Leaving it till December would be too late, unless you are a genious and can absorb quickly. It is important to understand the concepts.

Good luck.

Greg to be honest, I think you might need to go on one of those gamsat preparation courses, or do something a bit more formal than read the books given your background. The physics is year 12 for sure, but the chem is at least first year uni, some 2nd too I reckon from my distant organic days. The biol is probably only first year. That's the recall part, the hard part is then using that knowledge QUICKLY in a context you're unlikely to have seen before in an advanced way eg. basic cardiovascular knowledge (1st year) used in conjunction with some text and tables to identify the correct type of valvular incompetence from a sonogram (3rd year path kind of question). Three of these questions every 4.5 minutes!

If you're a book reader, you'll be fine with Section 1, and probably section 2 with some practice.

Anyway, the first stop I reckon could be to buy those trial exams you get from somewhere here (can't remember what they're called, but someone sells 10 at once). Then do a couple under exam conditions and give yourself a bit of a diagnostic. Let that guide you.

Good luck!

Trial exams come from ozimed but you can pick them up on ebay often...As to the study - I have a friend who is in 4th year med this year and he was a teacher and he took a whole year off to study the science for the gamsat.
