Looking through the forum on here and was eading about GPA's. It appears in Aus. GPA ranking goes till 10 from what I read, however from where I am it only goes to 4.5. I wanted to know how to convert my GPA or figure out what it is. I should add in I am from Canada and have a Masters for Nursing.

I know schools look at international students differently but this is a whole different ballpark I am walking into. I will be a resident of Melbourne when I am applying however as stated my education is from Canada.

Would love any help. Thanks!

Actually AUS GPA scores are out of 7. The table below is a very rough approximation. It depends on the university as to the exact values.

HD = 7
D = 6
C = 5
Pass 1 = 4
Pass 2 = 3
Fail = 0

You need to include all your subjects including when you fail. Add up the points for all your subjects in each year and divide by the total number of subject to get the avg for each year. Then use the following formula (puts more weight on later years).

GPA = ((avg for last year of deg) * 3 + (avg for 2nd to last year) * 2 + (avg for 3rd to last year))/6

A score of 5 (credit avg) is a min requirement for most schools, some are higher. Generally the rule of thumb is 5.5 is required to be competitive.

You would need to contact ACER to get the exact details for your uni.

Thank You cat2devnull.

Intresting way to calculate but that helps me greatly. I will also be contacting Acer to find out what the requirements are for each Uni. I am guessing that would be my best bet as well to find out if I have enough credits/subjects to transfer over from my Canadian Education in order to be accepted. Correct?

Could you also explain what the letters beside each number mean?

HD = 7
D = 6
C = 5

Again Thank You.

Wanted to add in as well, not sure if this applies. But what GPA/Grade do you need for GAMSTAT in order to be successful.

HD = high distinction
D = distinction
C = credit

To get in, you'll need a GPA of 6+ to be comfortable. High 5's are possible in some cases.

I probably should have pointed out that the Graduate Australian Medical, Dental Surgery & Optometry Admission Guide for 2012 is the first thing you should look at. It goes into a fair amount of detail on how things work.

Page 14-15, appendix B & C go into GPA.
Page 16 has the entry requirements for international applicants. GPA calculations will only be accepted for 'degrees awarded by recognised foreign universities'.

What you need is a table like in appendix B but for your uni. I assume Acer has some way to work it out. You might be able to use column H if your uni gives an A/B/C/D style mark.

My guess was a bit off it is more like;

High Distinction = 7
Distinction = 6.75
Credit = 5 .5
Pass 1 = 4.75
Pass 2 = 4.25
Fail = 0

As for the GAMSAT requirements, just like the GPA it is very dependant on the university. Most require a minimum of 50 for each of the 3 sections and generally you need to get in the mid 60's to stand a reasonable chance (90th percentile).

Don't forget that you can probably do the MCAT if you can't get to a GAMSAT testing centre. Hope this helps... Smile

Cast bullets would actually be better for boar because of the expansion, but FMJs will get the job done, but might blow a hole clean thru the boar, and not stop it as well
