Hi there,

I am in the last year of my degree and will probably finish with a GPA around 5.2 to 5.4, Just under the 5.5 sweet spot. I haven't registered for GAMSATs yet because I do not feel ready yet (i have an intern year to do still)

My questions is: how important is GPA to the entry?
I really want to go to melbourne uni (my brother went there and loves it). How great a GAMSAT score do I need to get into there? With my crappy GPA, can I get into anything at all even?

Feeling fairly depressed, im currently doing pharmacy and I HATE IT. Because I dislike the subject so much, I ended up slacking and giving up on several subjects which really dragged my GPA down.

For the pharmacist out there, how hard was the GAMSATS (given the prior knowledge gained from the degree)

What ballpark score do I need?

Thanks

Hi Mate...

This is going to sound harsh; but:

A GPA of 5.2-5.4 is not going to get you an interview at ANY university these days, yet alone U Melbourne.

I suggest that if you're really keen for medicine, you consider post graduate studies to get your GPA up MUCH HIGHER. 5.5 is not the sweet spot, but the 'bare ass' minimum, and unless you're carrying a killer GAMSAT result with that 5.5, then you'll struggle.

Just as a basic guide, the GAMSAT threshold for ND Fremantle this year was 62.

You don't have to trust me, why don't you call the universities you're interested in, and see what they have to say? Perhaps post your experiences to the board for everyone else to see Smile

Good luck.

L

Thanks for the reply

What kind of post grad work should I do?
Can't a very good gamsat result redeem me a bit?

I did well when i did physics in high school, and obviously in pharm, we do a fair bit of high level bio and chem. If i work my ass off with my science background, from now ready for 2012 gamsat, can it be achieved?

...for a course anywhere
surely its not unheard of that a GPA of 5.3 getting into med?

How do you expect to like medicine if you hate pharmacy, which involves intense study of disease and therapy? Another thing I'd like to add is that you haven't graduated from pharmacy yet, and have not even given actual job a go. At least be open to the profession and its opportunities before you throw it away. The real world is a different view to university.

I have read on a few (not sure which) university websites that if you have a postgrad degree your GPA can get bumped up. However, this is up to the universities to whether to bump it up or not so I would contact the universities that you are interested in attending for medicine.

Hope that helps you Very Happy

I have worked in community pharmacy for 4 years, i have worked in 2 different pharmacies with very different focus (privately owned nursing home supplier and priceline style-very commercial) and i have worked in hospital pharmacy as well (in compounding, dispensary and with a clinical pharmacist)

So since starting this degree i have lived and breathed pharmacy and I'm pretty sure I understand what I have to look forward to

My main gripe is: I study so hard to build up my therapeutic knowledge and have absolutely no use for this knowledge. Pharmacist are slaves to the pbs rules and are really truly just business people. This is not why i chose to do a health profession!

I liked working with the clinical pharmacist because i found that they get to use their knowledge to truly make a difference. it was truly fascinating working on the wards. Unfortunately, pharmacist cannot make direct changes and have to rely on doctors to change anything. it just made me jealous of the med students.

This is what makes me depressed about pharmacy. We start off knowing so much and in the end, most pharmacist just work retail.

I am a smart student, my GPA was 6s in the beginning of the degree because i was excited, now that i realised what a shitty idea it was to do pharm, i am truly finding it hard to be motivated to give a shit anymore. i truly hate the idea of selling makeup in a priceline one day

...and anyway, i am completing my intern year so i can be accredited, im not throwing anything away. my internship will also be in hospital so i get to work in a hospital for a whole year.

i guess i'm just disappointed with the directions this profession is going

Fair enough. At least you're seeing it through so it's not going to be thrown away. Hope you enjoy your internship!

I know a friend who is in the same situation as you. Hates pharmacy. Esp of the amount of students + new schools, lower wage rates, and essentially having to work under someone else in a community setting is quite unsatisfying.
Don't some unis take min. GPA of 5? have you done the gamsat?

What if u get a really high Gamsat and a GPA of 5

I am in the same boat as you elanious.I am final year nursing student and my GPA is around 5.1 - 5.2. I want to shift into medicine because of same reasons "Lack of Power".

You would be quite happy to know that you can actually apply to some uni.s, where GPA is just a hurdle. I think in Monash, you need only 5 Gpa. Selection is based on GAMSAT score + Interview.

Check out the forum, there is lot of info.
