I have been told recently in no uncertain terms that by the time I graduate medical (at the age of 37) the only viable option will be to become a GP. Not denigrating the role of GP's but I was hoping to specialise in Bariatrics or general surgery. The person telling me this is a Radiation Oncologist Registrar who enjoys the fact he is a 'tertiary care' provider (meaning minimal patient contact) and that by the time I finish my internship and first year residency Ill be 40 if Im entering a specialty program, 45 by the time Im a member of a Royal College of friggin whatever - which will be too old.
Unfortunately I never had the opportunities he did as he was growing up and Im not making excuses but now that Im 32 and plan to sit the gamsat next year (have passed it before with a 67 but GPA was below 5 in my teaching degree so am doing a bloody masters degree at the moment) this is the only time thats really presented itself as feasible to do it. I did have a GP in Toowoomba laugh and say that if Im good enough and enthusiastic enough that Ill get 'snavelled up' by any number of hospitals looking for more mature candidates for their fellowship programs. What do you think gang? |

Your GP in Toowoomba has it right. When you get into medical school, you will learn all the tricks (getting electives working with heads of departments at the hospitals/institutions where you want to specialize, show them your enthusiasm, insights, maturity, etc.). It would not matter even if you are older than you are. Setting completely aside the law and the ethics involved in not choosing someone exclusively on the basis of merit, there is the following dominant factor: you will be chosen mostly based on whether or not they would be "happy" spending 50-70 hours/week with you for several years!
