Hi!!

According to ACER, you don't need to have a degree in any one particular subject to be eligible to sit for the GAMSAT. Students from all streams (Humanities or the Sciences) can sit for GAMSAT.

For The University of Melbourne, the eligibility criteria depends on which country you are from. It is best to visit the official Uni website and get the latest details. Log onto www.medicine.unimelb.edu.au/future/md.html

You can also email them: mdhs-sc@unimelb.edu.au
or call them: (03) 8344 5890

The University of Melbourne will not be accepting graduates in 2010, as part of the transition from the 4 1/2 year MBBS to the new 4 yr postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) commencing in 2011.

Download this PDF. It is a really handy info book on all admissions related information: http://gamsat.acer.edu.au/images/documents/GMAC_Admission_Guide_2010.pdf

For the M.D. at Melbourne Uni in 2011, you need to have studied and passed a Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology subject each at 2ND YEAR level. This is possible without a science-based degree through correspondence (as prepgenie pointed out, visit Melb Uni site for a list of approved subjects from other unis).

GPA requirements haven't been released, but I went to an info lecture on the course last year and they said it'll most likely be 6.0-6.5. And you'll need a GAMSAT score of 68 minimum.

I'm sitting on 5.5 so far... If I get H1s for the rest of the year I can JUST squeeze in with a 6.1, God forbid I screw up the GAMSAT majorly haha.

I went to several of the MD seminars, and go to Melb Uni, and Geoff McColl never said a rough GPA or GAMSAT. They admit it is impossible to predict either as it is a new course and have no idea about the demand.

The website used to say the GPA will probably need to be between 5.5-6, but it seems to have been taken down.

Check the MD website for the latest information.

Hmm, yeh I wonder if the overall GAMSAT score will at all depend on percentiles of that year... a 68 this year would put you around the 95th percentiles... way too high just to get an interview T_T

dude.... Melbourne is ALWAYS highly sought after.... 68 for interview sounds silly, but its not as crazy as it sounds.

If you're not carrying a GPA well in the 6's and a GAMSAT over 65, I would start thinking really carefully about second and thrid preferences.

Hmm.. So do percentiles even matter at all with GAMSAT?... I was so proud of my 91st percentile this year but with a score of 65 I don't think it's gonna cut it... my weighted GPA is 6.72 but without it it would be closer to 6.48...
But with my 65 not sure if I'll stand a chance...

This is my first year doing GAMSAT so I'm not sure what to apply to... UQ would be nice but Deakin seems good for scores in the 60's...

Any suggestions for fellow 60'ers this year?

Percentiles don't matter.... 65 is a good score, and with your GPA it will set you in good stead just about anywhere.

I'd suggest that rather than thinking about which uni you're more likely to get into, you think instead about the programs, the cohort sizes, the feel of the university itself (go and sit in the med library, or in the courtyard and soak up the atmosphere if you can)....

The point is, that you're going to spend 4 years (maybe 5) there studying, and you really want to go for the best fit, not the sexiest name.

You mention UQ, Deakin and UMel, all of which are a long way from each other.... which makes me think you'll go just about anywhere! make some lifestyle enquiries, look into how well supported the students are, and the support available. How much will it cost you to live there? what is the liklihood that you'll find part time work? How many students are you fighting for decent lecture seating.... (I know for me, the idea of being in a 350 person lecture makes my stomach turn).

Some programs have podcasting, some use Itunes, some have nothing.... Some are incredibly well supported, and others have a 'sink or swim' mentality.

Good luck!

That's the same as what I got. As 2010 is the first year that they have accepted applications for the Doctor of Medicine, they do not have any information on minimum GPA or GAMSAT scores. It is reasonable to expect that the applications will be of a very high standard.

Is there any pre med group in the MU?
