Hey guys, I am sitting the GAMSAT for the first time on the 21st, and wanted to know if you have any advice or tips? So far I have downloaded the acer papers and gone through questions from section 1, but haven't achieved more than 40%! It's a bit disconcerting as there isn't long left- and I don't know how to improve.

I don't have money for online courses, but have been using revisegamsat site. My background knowledge in biology and chemistry is ok, and the prospect of writing essays is daunting though I can practice some more...the humanities? Really freaking me out.

All and any advice for the GAMSAT (particularly section 1) would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance Smile

Hiya Lily,

I find reading newspapers and bbc news website helps my reasoning skills, also try to increase your vocabulary because I found that to be my biggest downfall!

Organic chemistry is a big one, also reaction kinetics and acid base stuff seems to come up alot!

My downfall is the physics...I ALWAYS get those questions wrong! I wish there was a syllabus!!
Sad

How are you getting on with the essay prep? I found following a set essay plan helps alot!

Thanks! I will definitely keep on top of the news and try to expand my vocab in the time left. And chemistry wise, reaction kinetics I know I'm shoddy on so will brush up on that ASAP.

The essays are sort of a mixed bag for me- sometimes the topics don't seem too bad ('Punishment is as likely to harden and corrupt prisoners as it is to reform them..') and then I go online to see what others do, or the different topics that have come up... I read goldhawkgong's essay plan on 'big government vs small government' which caused a major rethink on both what and how I am writing.

I am also pretty tempted to leave the physics revision as bare basics- if I can score the marks on bio/chem, hopefully the 20% that comes from physics won't be too detrimental overall. I just don't see myself learning the whole of A-level physics in a few short weeks...

One more thing I wanted to ask was: do you have a set format on how you write your essays? I know each topic is different, but other than a quick 5 minute plan I am all over the shop! I would love to hear your thoughts, even if it's stating the obvious.

Totally with you on the syllabus thing- me thinks there is a market for 'GAMSAT for dummies'- complete with a syllabus. That is one book I would find a way to buy! You would think with the whole multiple choice thing, it wouldn't be so difficult to guess, but no. No such luck.

Heya,

My essay plan is as follows -

Intro
explain the argument, example of argument, exemplify argument

1st para
for the proposition

2nd para
if needed for the proposition, if not needed, start with opposition

3rd para
for the opposition

4th para
conclude

obviously this changes depending on the subject due to having more/less opinions on the area! lol

Ive just started a thread where we can review each others essays and whatnot - be great to see what you've done and hear your thoughts on mine! xx

Oh, that looks lovely. Will try using something like that and see how I do. Is the thread under 'GAMSAT essay reviewing?' I'm heading over now! x
