I know there are so many posts like this but just wondering what people think my chances would be of getting into med school with a gpa of 5.3?

I would go to any school, and do heaps of community service! I have another year left of my undergrad degree and have been studying for the gamsat next year (no idea how I'll go though)

any advice??

The general rule of thumb is 5.0 min, 5.5 to be competitive so my initial thought would be that you would have an uphill battle. Of course each uni is different, some are tougher than others. You also still have a year left which is the most important (due to the weightings) so you have time to drag it up.

As the Acer guide says;
"For detailed information on the graduate-entry courses, as well as university-specific entry requirements, you should contact the appropriate school. All GPA queries should be addressed to the schools."

"When deciding whether or not to submit an application, you are advised to make sure your GPA meets the required minimum standards and to check that your GAMSAT scores fall within the acceptable ranges reported in the individual university entries in this Guide."

"Griffith and Monash use the GPA as a hurdle requirement and rank applicants based on GAMSAT results.
Queensland uses the GPA as a hurdle, then ranks applicants by GAMSAT results using the GPA as a tie-breaker where necessary.
Flinders ranks applicants primarily on the basis of GAMSAT results, although applicants with outstanding GPAs may be given special consideration.
UOW, Notre Dame Fremantle and Notre Dame Sydney rank applicants on combined GPA, GAMSAT results and portfolio/ written submission."

The line about Flinders above is slightly misleading, the method described is used for deciding who gets an interview and then all three scores GPA/Gamsat/interview are used to decide offers.

You should consider a uni that puts less emphasis on GPA. Eg, as mentioned above, Flinders use all three scores so your GPA is only worth 33% of their calculation as opposed to another that might use GPA/Gamsat 50% each. Of course smashing the Gamsat never hurts. Smile

The same goes for volunteer/community work, some unis consider it important and others don't care. I just sat an interview at Flinders and they didn't ask anything about it (of course I still found an excuse to get it into the conversation). If they require a portfolio submission then it's probably more important.

Hope this helps...
