Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've got a selection of essays for your enjoyment here. Your feedback would be appreciated as they come from the depths of my own mind.

First up, an essay on humour. Do excuse my British spelling.

Woman : Seeking man with GSOH

Mizner reasoned “I can usually judge a fellow by what he laughs at”. This idea that a person’s sense of humour is a good measure of them is borne out by the personals section. A cursory glance will have one acronym leap out at you. What is this GSOH that all women want in a man?

To a visiting alien with a superficial understanding of humans they might assume it has something to do with height, power or wealth. Good Size Of House, perhaps? Would they struggle to comprehend why a “Good Sense Of Humour” is so sought after? Let’s try to explain this mystery.

A sense of humour is based on many aspects of a person’s character, their intellect, humanity, humility and self-awareness. Thus it is no suprise that it is a highly valued trait, aside from the pleasure of being in the company of someone who makes you laugh.

Grellet poignently said “I expect to pass through this world but once.” This feeling of a fleeting life is a call to action. This fleeting feeling can crush the spirit, and shows a man’s spirit to be powerful if he can laugh in spite of it.

This is why laughter is a powerful force. It shows an indomitable spirit in the face of adversity. It shows a character that reflects on the struggles of man and comes out with strength.

The strongest laugh thus, is to laugh at oneself. To have self-awareness enough to see your personal fragility and still be able to laugh shows the strength Mark Twain had in mind when he said “against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand”.

It should really come as no surprise why “GSOH” is a requirement on personal adverts the world over.

Well, I hope you have some insight into what's good and bad about it and don't be shy to take it to pieces.

I am wondering if it would make sense to have a FAQ section in the forum?

Right now there are a lot of the how do I ... type questions all over the forum but it is hard to locate them and they often get repeated.
