Hey guys
I'm thinking of doing gamsat this year for the second time. First time, i got a score of 61, but with the cutoffs rising each year, i didn't want to take any chances. However, i'm worried about this second time attempt and whether you really do improve on ur second attempt. I know some of you have done the exam more than once and wanted to know what your experiences were :) I know i can always use the 61 but.. yeah, really would like to improve.
Ps- before anyone asks, no i didnt apply to unis which my 61 score as I'm still yet to finish my bachelors degree (this year's my last).
Please help, i'm worrying myself sick lol.
Cheers:) |

I know lots of people who have sat GAMSAT several times and have very little change score wise..... I've also read a few anecdotes here about people achieving huge changes (but I can't confirm the validity of those stories).
If you studied hard, and got a 61, then I would guess that you're probably unlikely to make a massive shift in your score.... if you did very little, then with a more intensive study program I'm sure you could improve your score significantly.
I guess the question to ask is "what do I lose by sitting GAMSAT again?"
If you get 61 again, or less, does it really matter?
I would suggest that as long as studying for, and sitting GAMSAT doesn't adversely effect your current undergraduate studies, then go for it. Perhaps knowing the format, and being a little more relaxed might reap dividends.....
From a bigger picture perspective, the overwhelming majority of things I learnt studying for GAMSAT have come in useful for Medicine..... so perhaps you can look at the second round of GAMSAT study as a way of consolidating your base knowledge for Med 2012?
The biggest advice I can give you is to learn to deal with your stress. Being freaked out about Medicine over 12 months before starting is a recipe for disaster..... Try and reframe that energy into something positive (I know... easy to say from the other side).
Good luck, and keep us posted how you go. |

I would go again, I took the gamsat twice and my score jumped 11 points. The 2nd round you are more calm and prepared and you manage your time and concentration better.
You can also re-prepare and re-study which I found makes a huge difference in science, in my first attempt I knew the theory but in my second I understood the theory and how it was all interconnected.
Definately take it again! |

Hello all,
I recommend doing it again, most of the people I've spoken to have gotten the same or higher.
I have a really really dumb question to ask everybody though - I got 64 in 2010 and am going to sit it again, just wanted to double check that if I get less than 64 (haven't done much study compared to last year) I can still use last year's score, discard 2011 score and it'll be all good? If it's crap, my 2011 score can just be thrown out? |

Thanks for that guys!. the first time i did it, i barely had time to prep so yeah it was just at trial year. Im actually taking a course this time and dedicated a good 2.5 months to study for the gamsat (im doing abt an hr study each day). I feel a lot more prepared but im not expecting any major shifts in my score. Im hoping to get a 63 this time round. I think thats a reasonable expectation? lol. |

sounds very possible jazz, you may even do better than 63, it is not uncommon for some people to increase their score by 8 or more points on their second attempt |

Hey guys
Ive realised that Ive made a massive mistake in my preparation in the last 3 months. I have only been learning science knowledge. I know biology like the back of my hand, and organic chemistry pretty well. I have also been reading books on philosophy and other classical literature, but today i looked at an ACER exam paper and crapped myself.
I cant interpret some of the logical diagrams and need to improve my reasoning skills.
Help! How do I do this? How does one improve their resoning skills and data/diagrammatic interpretation?
Thank you. |

Some people decide to get a math graphic primer or even an introduction to epidemiology book, but the most time efficient and effective way to prepare is to do as you are already doing: jump in the lake, both feet first and hammer through the ACER materials. After you completed it as a timed testing experience, go through the booklet in 1-2 days thoroughly so that you consolidate your learning before going on to the next booklet (of course, there are 4 in all).
If you happen to have the Gold Standard book, there is an appendix on GAMSAT math which underlines the key relationships which come up regularly. But even so, the more helpful thing is to go over the worked solutions of the exam in the book. |
