Hey guys,

I'm really keen on getting into med and making a large difference to the current medical system however I feel as if I'm in a position that doesn't allow me to reach the goal of medicine.

I sat the gamsat last year and I got an overall score of 50 which I am looking to increase to 60+ this comming year.

The issue however is with my GPA. I have an extremely low GPA and i know that the GPA is where the majority of the weight is. Is it possible to bring the GPA up to a 6 even if your current GPA is standing at below 3! I only have 2 years left!

Please help me out.

much appreciated.

I think the only way would be to either do a second degree or do an honours year. But you would have to do exceptionally well in your honours...

Hi Shkar, where you mentioned that you have two years left of your undergrad does that mean that you have just finished your first year or are you studying part-time? How many subjects have you got left?

I suppose you must only have a few subjects left because you have sat the gamsat and acer only let you sit that if you are in the last year of your undergrad, or your second last year (or of course, if you have already got your undergrad).

Depending on how many subjects left, I would suggest a couple of things:
i) if you are full time, would you consider going part time? I know alot of people that struggled through their degree when they had a heavy timetable and then had responsiblities with work which didn't let them devote as much time to study as they liked. Even doing one subject less per semester will free up some extra time so that you can concentrate harder on the subjects. You can always look at picking up a subject in the winter or summer holidays to make up for time if you still want to finish asap.
ii) What about if you changed degrees? there might be something at your Uni with a similar major or such. what would happen is you would get to choose how many and which subjects you would like to get credits for, and not select the lower graded ones or failed. It could put you a year or more behind though, but still an option.
iii) Otherwise, what eisoj suggested was good - maybe a second degree, or an honours year or masters.

All the best

my tip is to ace your last 2 years - pending how many units you have.
If you can achieve over 70 in all your units (again pending how many units you have left and which uni you are at) then I suggest full throttle to getting the best marks you can. The better your GPA the lower your GAMSAT score and vice versa if that is your scenario. The GPA proves how well a student can apply themselves (well it is meant to indicate this) and how much a student can achieve at Tertiary level - If you can ace the GAMSAT then your GPA doesn't have to be as competitive, remembering that some uni's use a 50/50 ratio to offer interviews, some use a 1/3 of GPA gamsat and supp forms etc so best to get as best the marks you can at uni - because in my opinion the gamsat is super hard to ace!

3/7 GPA, does that mean you've failed lots of subjects...aim for 100 and you'll only lose a few, rather than aiming for 50 and getting 55...good luck Shocked

Hi shkar, I think you should aim for the best that you can give. I think a 6 from a 3 will be hard to achieve but if you have 2 years of full time study left then it won't be too difficult to attain even a 5.5 or 5.6 which is the minimum required for applying to USyd.

I've seen many people with GPAs of 5.6 ish getting into medicine, although perhaps not the top three. Bear in mind that if you do achieve a GPA within the 5.0 range then you MUST try your absolute maximum at the GAMSAT tests.

If you do well in one, it means that you can afford to do slightly less well in the other. I hope this helps Smile and I really think that you can do it! Failing doesn't mean you can't get back up again and achieve your dreams.

Aim for excellent results for the remainder. If that doesnt a masters degree via coursework at UQ or QUT.

Bad GPA's are like criminal records but there is always a way.

Don't worry too much - i am doing a second degree - its not too bad because you're that much older, wiser and more experienced in all facets of life - an important component for the interview stage i imagine - doing a second degree shows initiative and passion in my opinion!!
