I've gained a WAY higher GAMSAT score than I expected - 68 - which alters my plan of just applying for the Unis that accept the lowest scores.
I'm sure I could pass an interview, and my weighted GPA is 6.1. So from what I've read on this very helpful forum, I can probably apply to anywhere (!!!) and have a reasonable chance.
Problem is... I've never been to Australia. So I have absolutely no idea of what the different Med Schools, and cities, are like. And every university proclaims themselves to be the best in the country for research/teaching/lifestyle!
So really, truthfully, honestly.... what's the dirt on each Uni? Which is better at what? What's the ups and downs? What sort of things influenced your short-list of preferred Unis?
(I just discovered, for instance, that Monash's campus is 160km east of Melbourne - not IN Melbourne. I have also discovered that Brisbane is above, not below Sydney. Geography was never my strong point).
Since I'd be shifting from overseas I'm happy to go anywhere. The only things influencing me at the moment is:
a) mate who said 'Oooh go to Melbourne, it's a awesome city' and I have some friends on the Gold Coast
b) that I don't like hot climates
c) and that I like hands-on and visual learning.
I really don't want to base my choice of Uni on those first two points alone!
So if you were me, where would you apply to? |

the gold coast is no where near melbourne, different state to be specific.
griffith on the gold coast however is the newest med school and i am finding it great at the moment.
UQ is ditching their lectures next year and using podcasts instead, so no sure how good that'll be. |

Podcasts? I'm not keen on that idea. UQ is out then!
What do you like about Griffith? What's it known for?
Thanks Jabroney! |

brandywine. Don't come to UQ. We prefer people who take Medicine (and the selection of a Med school) seriously. |

I think thats a bit harsh - it didnt sound like s/he isn't taking it seriously, just not sure which university to apply to coz of being from overseas. I know really brilliant people (close rellies included - one who is now a fantastic astrophysicist) who based their choice of overseas unis on less criteria than brandywine and became a real asset to their unversity.
I guess by not having any preconceived notions of what the university is like brandywine will maybe choose a good uni based on real med/prospective students opinions, not just the unis "reputation". Also, makes sense to ask here as thats what this forum is about and if they did better than they thought they may be able to get into somewhere they hadn't thought about.
Thats my opinion anyway |

mmm. I know a lot of people chose UQ so they didn't need to interview? doesn't seem like the most robust school selection to me....
I'm not sure there are any med schools are open to applicants who are not taking things seriously....
Flames aside,
Yes, I agree with the previous poster, its important for our new friend here to do his/her research. the key is that talking on forums like this is just one aspect of the research into a med school.
I recommend getting onto the internet, and really looking into the areas, costs of living etc, as some a MUCH dearer places to live than others. Also, once you narrow it down, email the med student society and ask if there is someone you can call to have a chat about uni life and their experience.
Most of us would happily take a call from a prospective student..... saves us from having to study
GOOD LUCK! great GAMSAT score. |

I would be very interested in students views of the universities, both from Italian and non-Italian students. Probably Youtube for those.
Also, I would be interested in a written comparison of seats available EU and non-EU, cost of living at each site, range of ethnicities, transportation, etc. |
