Hi everybody,
my name is joel and i am looking to sit gamsat in 09. I'm about to start 2nd year of Nursing and feel quite inadequate with my level of knowlege in physics, chemistry & biology. I haven't done any science since year 10, apart from pdhpe which is hardly science. I have quite a lot of work ahead of me and I thought that this place would be a great place to network and source help and guidance. Look forward to being involved in many discussions to come. Joel. |

G'day Joel, welcome to the forum mate. There are a lot of people in your kind of situation here who are feeling the pressure, but I'm studying with heaps of non-science people and they tend to really kick ass in medicine, so the first thing is to know that it's a completely obtainable goal.
You've chosen a good spot to come to for information and networking, there are a lot of great regulars here who are very helpful, but also take a look through the existing threads in the forum as they can be very helpful also.
Cheers,
Adrian. |

Thanks Adrian,
It's comforting to hear that and certainly motivating. I have read through a fair few threads, and I believe that you got into Medicine at Griffith? Is that for this year? Congratulations! I think that is outstanding. I went on to medprep the other day and did their half a test (for practice, oh and it was the free one lol) and have never felt so stupid in my life. Though I do see myself as a 'new student' to Medicine is my Goal College, being without knowledge and ready to start his first day, I am trying to remain strong and confident to graduate from this metaphorical school to study medicine in 2010. GAMSAT appears hard beyond belief and I am thrilled to be going up against it. I know that a great knowledge base starts with a good foundation of knowledge, that being said, do you have any ideas or words of advice on where I can start learning biology, chemistry and physics. I realise the painstaking path ahead of me, but believe I am ready to walk it. Any help or advice you or anyone else for that matter may be able to offer would be greatly appreciated. Joel.
P.S. Apologies for the rant and life story. |

Haha! Never apologise for ranting - that's what this place is here for!
To answer your question, yes I did get into Griffith med and am currently in my second week of classes. It's already getting harder, but it has shown me that it is definately worth working towards.
I think in order for you to build your sciences, get an old basic chemistry book and learn the basics at your own pace. At this point, I wouldn't reccommend looking at organic chemistry until you are comfortable with basic chem, as it can be very daunting. I think you will be fine with biological sciences, doing nursing you will have a degree of anatomy and physiology, as well as pathophysiology and possibly even pharmacology. As for physics, this can be quite confusing even with the help of a textbook. Do you have any friends who have a basic knowledge of physics? It might be useful to get a little bit of tuition here, but I wouldn't reccommend spending copious amounts of money on a tutor unless you really want to.
This is a process that provides you with the opportunity to learn about yourself, and you can take pride in your progress. It is hard, and it is worthwhile.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did (with a lot of un-necessary stressing!). |

hey Joel and Adrian
and hello everyone else thats reading this post. Just so we're all on the same track here, the name is Hung and I'm on a similar boat at Joel, that is studying nursing and about to enter 2nd year with the hope (with some preparation) to sit the GAMSAT in 2009. the only different is that I acutally did some science at tertiary level.
My question is, would it be good to take some classes at TAFE to catch up on all the missing senior high school science such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which provides all the fundamental aspect of science or would it be better to study these subjects in more details at tertiary level in Uni.
Thank you, this will be it for now |

Weclome Hung!
The TAFE courses are not a bad idea, they are very comprehensive. |

Hi everyone, I was reading all your posts and just like joel, i am thinking about sitting the gamsat in 2009 too. At the moment I am finishing my PhD so it seems like a good time to start studying for it. One problem that I have is, I dont know where to start. Here is my question to anyone out there who would like to start a study group, I am aware that we might not be in the same state but perhaps if we set ourselves goals every second week or so that way we encourage each other, what do u guys say about that?? |

Hey Kitty,
That sounds like a great idea. Even if we have each other to answer to that would be great.
Let me know if you're still interested! |

Hello everyone, I am currently a grad diploma in biotech student who is looking to sit GAMSAT in 2009. Its great to hear there are others who are also sitting for it the same time as myself. I read this thread from the beginning and it has been useful. I graduated with a science degree with not much knowledge in Physics and Organic Chemistry, so I feel lost too. I never really liked these two subjects so I am finding it alittle difficult.
But I think someone suggested to read through the basics of chemistry before handling organic chem, and thanks for that advice,I think it sounds like a better plan then tackling everything at once. =) Good Luck to all |
