Hi All,
Im 21 and currently completing a Bachelor of Arts. Have always wanted to be a doctor (My earliest memory of this is getting into trouble when i was in Year 4 for using up all the ink from printing everything about the human body off World book!) but got really sick in year 11 and year 12 (ended up only just passing the attendance requirement) and knew i wouldnt get the marks required so i chose to head down a different path.
But, i kept coming back to medicine and in the past few weeks have decided to give graduate medicine a real shot.
I will graduate from arts in 2009 so am going to sit the 2008 Gamsat as a trial and then hopefully improve the following year and secure myself a position for 2010.
I have no knowledge in Chemistry, Biology or Physics so am spending the next 8 months studying hard to cover everything.
Would really like to meet people (even if its just via email) who are in the same boat (i.e. who have no background in the sciences) to exchange study ideas/materials etc.

Hi Emma
Wow, your experience parallels mine so strongly it's scary! I'm from an Arts background as well and even though I studied Science at uni too, I never got into it post-degree like with Arts. I'm currently an English Language Teacher working with international students. Like you, I've always wanted to be a doctor but after a big downhill slide academically in years 11 and 12 (I went to a ratty public school) and continuing problems at uni, I convinced myself that it was not for me and I became really disillusioned and even a little bitter. I was also thinking of the money/time hassles involved in training in med and I still had hopes of marrying and having a family.
Now though, at 28, having experienced the world of work a little more, I see that there are worse things in life than studying one's butt off for 4 years on no money. What I'm experiencing now is doing a job that I really don't like, that I dread going to every day, pay excellently as it does; a life without challenge or meaning; a yearning to test intellectual skills that are now lying dormant and rusting away; a life that I never thought I would be living when I was a child and, like you, fascinated by the human body (my story runs a bit like yours: I would read the First Aid book for fun ).
I considered the GAMSAT a couple of times and both times put it away as impracticable and too hard. The last time was after visiting a sick uncle in hospital and seeing the way the doctor treated him (literally chatted to him for 45 seconds and moved on; didn't seem to care at all and could've been a car salesman the way he came across). The feeling it gave me was that doctors do not do anything useful or meaningful and so I forgot the idea and got a teaching job at uni.
But yesterday I registered for 2008 GAMSAT. Not sure why, you could blame it on the credit card being available. But I have this feeling that you only live once and I want to just try it and see what I get. I'm not sure whether I actually want to commit to a medical degree yet. Two things that make me want to though are: the thought of going to places like Afghanistan and working with disadvantaged women; and my best friend thought I couldn't do it and advised me to forget it. I so want to prove her wrong. . .
So that's me in a nutshell. Tell me more about yourself Emma. It would be great to exchange ideas/experiences online. Write back if you can and pm me your email.
Ciao! |
