I am seeking advice as to what to study in the lead up to Gamsat study. I havent done science since high school (6yrs) so was planning to spend time going through different science courses (chem, physics, biol, biochem, etc) until mid next year and then begin studying for gamsat 2008.

Would this be a complete waste of time, or just allow me to spend more time absorbing the info i need to be successful? I am concerned that if I just studied for gamsat, when i started med (which I am hoping to do) I wouldnt be able to cope if dont know enough science.

Any advice is much appreciated!!!

Worry about GAMSAT first - if you can get in with a reasonable section 3 you're up to the level of science required for medicine.

Worry much more about doing well on GAMSAT. You don't say what you're undergraduate degree is, or whether you did science subjects in VCE/HSC. Either way, you realistically have to be at first year uni chem, biol and VCE Physics level to give GAMSAT a proper shot. Most people do this by - surprise - doing first year uni science subjects, some don't though and with alot of work you might get yourself up to the required standard, but without knowing more I'm highly skeptical of this.

I know there are some people who get through Section 3 with Humanities backgrounds, and I'd be interested to know what preparation they do. For my money, I reckon it's nigh on impossible having just sat GAMSAT last Saturday unless you're some kind of genius - that mother sucked out stuff I tried to remember from every year of a BSc, especially the organic chem.

I know they say GAMSAT is (unlike MCAT) NOT a test of recall, and it wouldn't be if you had all day to do it. With only 3 hrs for Section 3 however, it looks almost as 'recally' as MCAT if you are going to answer all or almost all of the questions in time.

Anyway, I still reckon the best way to find out is to get sample tests and do them under test conditions ie. all sections over 6 hrs. That will give you a diagnostic of how to prepare.

I dont agree that you are more likely to succeed with a science background....
I know people who have tried 2 or 3 times with medical science backgrounds, yet my cousin, who was a music major tried first time and got in easily!! absolutely aced each section. He just did the bridging courses and put the effort in....

I have recently completed the Gamsat, and made a complete pigs ear of it. I have a bachelor in engineering, and a masters in science. A science background is without doubt an advantage, but you will not do well with a broad knowledge. A 747 pilot will not be able to fly a fighter jet to the limits of it capability.

You MUST prepare for Gamsat. This paper is all about time constraints. If you have a year to get ready, do this:

1. Buy the papers that are provided by ACER. Without these you have no chance.

2. Buy an organic chemistry book. I have one by John McMurry (Findamentals of Organic Chemistry or something like that). Its an excellent book. Make sure you know all the main groups involved in organic chemistry, but for the love of god, dont think this will sort you out come exam time. You need to know how to manipulate your knowledge.

3. All questions are worth the same mark - so do the ones you know first!!! You will get very tired for the last hour or so of section 3, so you may aswell spend your time doing ones you may only get a couple out of 5 correct in at the end.

4. Try and join one of the courses available for the study if you can. I am living in Denmark and did the test in Ireland, so I couldnt do the course in dublin, but Im sure it will help. Dont make money a problem. It is an investment so dont skimp.

There is a lot more I could tell you. By all means ignore most of it if you like, everyone has different levels of knowledge. But dont dont dont be as disappointed as I am come the time next year. I am absolutely gutted by my performance. So do yourself a favour and approach the exam as the first part of learning towards a life in medicine.

my email address is aidanfurey at hotmail dot com if you want to ask me any questions in the future. I would be more than happy to help.
