yeah funny that. And NSW has the worst funding for dentistry . No medicare hahah doesnt look that good does it??
Oh well it loooks like medicine is heading towards the public and dentistry is fully private. Thats not always a bad thing for us because there will never be a shortage of jobs but its crap for the public. I went to see my dentist last week and it cost me $170 for an examination and a minor clean. haha i couldnt believe it. But then again thats what were going to get payed so there is an upside. ( no wonder dentists get such a high salary )
So besides it being unorganised how are you finding the whole medicine + dentistry thing? Is it frustrating learning things you will never need?
What are the facilities like and how much patient contact have you had?

No patients yet - we think it will be in Sept. But we have been doing Oral examinations and just started scaling teeth on each other.

I don't mind the Med stuff - it's actually quite interesting. And we will use it even if not directly, I think anyway. There is going to be a trial of combining Med and Dent students in PBL tutorials at the end of this year in a bid to foster better interprofessional acknowledgement and harmony etc etc. I think the view will be to combine the PBLs in the future. So that might be the case for you guys next year or the year after.

The facilities are pretty good given their age now. The faculty is apparently upgrading the simulation clinic to have more lifelike phantom heads. Unfortunately since the student numbers used to be quite small, occasionally there isn't enough space for all of us, all the time, and there isn't enough tutors to go around for the whole year. But it looks like we're managing to get through the required work. It will be interesting to see what happens when they increase the student numbers and how it will work?! I heard mutterings that there will be 120 first years next year?

120?? i called them up and we were told 80?? i dont know whether thats a good or a bad thing. An increase of 50% is going to make it a hell of a lot harder to find a job in metro sydney .
The combining of med and dent students is a great idea. Haha bring some of those med people off their high horses.
What undergrad degree did you do?

Mate if they said 80 then that's probably right. Remember my info was just murmurings. I wouldn't worry too much about the work - the info that we get is that there is apretty big shortfall. and the bush aint that bad to work in.

I've been a Physio for the past 11 years

Hey Alex, I am planning on sitting for the GAMSAT next year and hoping to get into B.Dentistry @ USYD.

I was wondering, if you could tell me what GAMSAT score you got, and what your GPA was when you applied? Also, how did you prepare for the GAMSAT?

Regards,
Sunny

Applications finally close tomorrow. Med applicants have already heard about interviews, but I think we've got another month to go. This wait is killing me. I, too, heard the rumour about the extra places in dent at USyd this year, from someone in the faculty. I asked the Dean at the information evening and he denied it, but who knows. On the upside, it increases the chances of getting in, but on the downside I've heard that resources are pretty scarce in that program. You'd think with the 30G+ yearly tuition fees that the shortages wouldn't be so noticeable.

It looks like the Dental acceptances will be coming out before the Med ones again this year. This should help eliminate anyone accepting dent as a fall back option.

Question: Has anyone managed to get their hands on some wire and wire bending tools to practice with yet? If so, could you give me a few hints as to where to get some.

All the best,
-pants

How is everyone else feeling, i heard somewhere that last year's group they got their offers about 7th Sept..thats pretty soon!

Does anyone know whether the interview offers are sent by snail mail or email?

Does anyone know how many places USyd has for fee paying ou of the 120 or so places on offer this year?

As you can prolly tell...im a little on edge, lol!

anyway, good luck to you all!

yeah im a little on edge. checking my email every 10 mins hahah
yeah 7th of september isthe date we find out. hopefully
hahah umm dunno how the places will be allocated. the faculty is still denying that there is 120 places. i know there is 15 spots for international but the rest is anyones guess. hpefully 30 spots fee paying and the rest HECS. we have a really good chance of getting in because of them upping the gamsat scores as well as upping the number of spots. hahah
hope to see you at the interviews....
btw what degree are u studying or have done???

hey

im studying biomed at newcastle uni..in my final year (hopefully!).
Im hoping they dont up the gamsat mark too much, as mine isnt great (only 58 )
I definately like the idea of the increasing places...but then again they interview so many people (around 400 i heard) that its still going to be incredibly difficult to get in (im a bit of a pessimist..if u havent already guessed, lol)

god i hope i get an interview!!!!

Hey guys,

It's nice to see posts from other people in the same boat.

When I was at the Dent info evening the dean said that approximately 260 people went for interviews last year. That makes it about a 1 in 3 chance of getting in. If they increase the places (i think Anne said that if they do increase the intake the local places would increase by 15-20 only) the chances are slightly better.

I think the cut off for gamsat scores will probably be at 55. Did anyone hear any different?

so that means there will only be about 70 local places???
so 15 international and 35 full fee paying.
I hope the gamsat cut off isnt much higher than 55 i got 59 in my gamsat so i will be crushed if i dont at least get an interview!
I seriously dont know that many people applying. Im in my last year of BMedSci and there is only a handfull of people applying. Or at least admitting they are applying.
I talked to anne last year and she said the reason they increased the GAMSAT marks is because too many people applied and they were just bogged down with interviews. I recon they are going to cut it back to less interviews ie with the higher GAMSAT mark.
I want to call her up and ask what the actual cutoff is but i dont want to pester them as i have done in the past. that and the fact that it could be 60 hahahah
that would really make my day.
Oh well guys only another couple of days and we will see what the cutoff is and hopefully get interviews. Thursday is coming up fast.
